THE ARTIST

Luciano Sabba – Biography

Besides a solid mime training with Marcel Marceau in Paris, Luciano Sabba also took lessons in music, modern dance, and drama. He studied at the Academia d’Arte Drammatica in Rome and subsequently worked with various Italian companies before settling permanently in New York and Amsterdam. There, he developed a distinctive mime style characterized by a fusion of avant-garde aesthetics and environmental consciousness expressed through sculpture, dance, music, photography, video, and fashion.

In the United States, he continued his mime studies with Michael Henry at The Yard, directed by ballet dancer and choreographer Patricia Nanon, in Martha’s Vineyard. The following year, Luciano Sabba participated in the Vineyard Players Playhouse’s celebrated musical show, “Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris.”

A Visionary Mime Artist

Mr. Sabba has performed and taught mime at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Natural History, as well as in schools and colleges across the East Coast. He later became Artist-in-Residence at Artpark in Lewiston, New York. His shows include dancers and models, and he collaborated with New York interior designer David Barrett and couture stylist-illustrator Kristen Riley. These productions feature diverse soundtracks that transform visual sets into immersive experiences.

Mr. Sabba choreographed and performed a Matisse-inspired benefit show for the Churchill School at Studio 54, in collaboration with former Schiaparelli model and YSL fashion icon Maxime de La Falaise, alongside Joanne Woodward and Alexis Smith on the board. Returning to Europe, he performed at the Shaffy Theatre in Amsterdam, the Spoleto Festival, and the Arciliuto Theatre in Rome.

In New York, he formed the Luciano Sabba Mime Company, which made its debut at the Brooklyn Arts Council.

Luciano Sabba’s work appeals to audiences of all ages through visually engaging imagery, sensuality, and innocence. His artistic influences are reflected in his performances, including surrealism, design, fashion, architecture, sculptural form, silent film star Buster Keaton, movement frozen into photographic images, and the paintings and collages of Robert Rauschenberg. Mr. Sabba has since taught and performed many of his mime works in schools, theaters, art galleries, and fashion events.

Luciano Sabba: The Art of Mime

Luciano Sabba: The Art of Mime forms the basis of development for all students. Mime, based on movement, enhances all forms of self-awareness and self-discovery. Throughout the history of theatre, pantomime has brought discipline, depth, and sensitivity to students in the interpretation of personal creativity.

This outlook forms the foundation of Mr. Sabba’s performances and workshops. His work blends mime with dance, sculpture, music, photography, and fashion. Classes welcome students of all levels wishing to explore gestural theatre through classical and modern experimental mime.

MIME

True creativity derives from a state of inner freedom — a state of harmony, balance, and unity. This freedom allows feelings, thoughts, and movements to emerge from a deeper place within oneself. Movement becomes intuitive, effortless, and free from compulsion or mental manipulation.

The growth and development of self-awareness and self-knowledge guide participants toward this inner freedom and authentic creative expression.

SHAPES OF LIFE

SHAPES OF LIFE is a mime performance designed for high school and college audiences, drama students, and general viewers.

The program is divided into two parts:

  • The first explores the surrounding world — machines, toys, puppets, and impressions such as birds in flight or leaves falling.
  • The second investigates the inner world — dreams, joy, vanity, greed, and sorrow.

This program serves as an excellent introduction to the art of mime. Assisted by a female partner, Luciano Sabba traces the history of mime from Commedia dell’Arte to modern experimental mime. The content is witty, engaging, entertaining, and informative. Each performance concludes with an audience discussion.
